Chewing Gum

Chewing gum was originally made from tree sap (a natural rubber) and waxes. 

However, when synthetic rubber was invented to replace natural rubber following the second world war, chewing gum made with natural rubber was also replaced.

 

According to The Vegetarian Resource Group, if the label states “gum base” “petroleum, lanolin, glycerin, polyethylene, polyvinyl acetate, petroleum wax, stearic acid, and latex may be among the components."

 

A World Health Organization cancer research team  found evidence suggesting that vinyl acetate, which is used to manufacture polyvinyl acetate has been shown to cause tumors in lab rats. 

 

Where do you put your chewing gum when you are finished?  In the garbage? On the street? Do you swallow it? There are various amounts of other chemicals and sweeteners used to create chewing gum that are harmful to our health and the environment. And did you know chewing gum is not biodegradable.
